Procreate
Your iPad sketch studio that feels like real paper, fast and tactile. Built so you can draw, paint, animate, and capture process with an Apple Pencil.
Pros
- One time purchase avoids a subscription
- Clean and intuitive interface
- A wide array of tools and built-in brushes
- Timelapse and simple animation for quick process and motion
Cons
- Exclusively available for Apple
If you draw on an iPad, Procreate is the app that actually feels like drawing. The interface gets out of the way so the gesture is all that matters. Strokes respond in a way that keeps your hand confident, which makes rough ideas read like real marks and keeps momentum through roughs and finals.
Procreate is built around craft and flow. Brushes are enormous fun to tweak and they behave predictably when you push pressure and tilt. Layers, blend modes and quick selection tools are honest and fast. Timelapse recording turns process into content automatically, so your process becomes a shareable asset without extra work. The animation tools are simple and useful for storyboards, short clips, and quick motion tests rather than full length animation projects.
It also plays nice with the rest of your toolkit. You can rough in concepts, export PSDs for finishing, and hand off assets without too much pain. At the same time, it avoids the needless complexity of desktop suites and keeps the act of making tactile. That focus is why so many illustrators and concept artists carry Procreate in their daily practice.
